Supervisory Meeting 23rd November

We discussed the upgrade assessment returned by Dr. Stephen Walker.
Notes from the discussion:
- What is the idea of CREATI? Does it depend on a particular platform such as Google Earth or can it be detached from?
- We have to define thoroughly what is collective memory in the research and how the collective memory bank can be developed? - To show that the process in the research is not linear and to ensure that there is a cyclic/feedback process built in.
- We need to be able to describe what is 'Urban Design' in the current curriculum? Is there any different between 'Western' understanding of urban design and 'Yogyakarta' urban design? Or does the CREATI and collective memory be different if it is be applied in the urban design or pedagogical practices in that way?
- Practical arrangement for the next experiment.
- Timetable about carrying out the experiment (to identify the potential risk, what should be done to minimize it, how many participant will be involved, how the number of participant be achievable?)

Supervisory meeting 3 Nov 2010

Fela shows the progress made since the eCAADe paper presentation in Zurich. A new Google Site has been developed to replace the existing one. The new site is better structured and designed which will server the next phase of evaluation much better. We also discussed the need for a separation of a developer site from a user-accessible site and the potential usefulness of extracting a list of all entries of Collective Memory collected through the Google Earth balloons and make it available on the Google Site.

Conducting Pilot Study and The Results

A Pilot Study was conducted in early April 2010 and inlvolved
students in Department Architecture, Atma Jaya Yogyakarta University.

Several problems occured during the pilot study and students gave some feedback such as:
DETAIL:
- Students need more detailed information.
- Combining text and images in one balloon make the information easier to be read (collective memory)
- Alternatively balloons should be designed to be flexible (can be removed, pop-up balloons-appeared/disappeared, etc)
RECOGNISABILITY
- Location of Malioboro is slightly difficult to be seen, when the models were displayed. The basic models (without textures) disturb the ability to recognise the places → building roof should be modelled by attaching the texture from google earth satellite images
ACTIVITY SUPPORT
- some students found that the 3Dmodels sank too deeply, so they couldn’t see the shopping arcades (pedestrian walkways) → (it might be caused the terrain layer is off)
- it is important to models the terrain to show the street, pedestrians dan open spaces, because sometimes they were asked to design that spaces based on activity support.
- Model of street, open space, pedestrian, etc can be downloaded.
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM AND CIRCULATION
- street should be modelled in detail such as showing the halte, parking area for traditional vehicles (horse carriage, ‘becak’, etc).
- provide information about transportation system and circulation

Results from the pilot study were presented in eCAADe Conference in September 2010

Supervisory Meeting on 3rd March 2010

The discussion is much about the progress for the pilot study.
Some notes are below:
- So far the collective memory embedded into the models are photos, text and videos.
Through the balloons in different colours, participants will be able to access
information related to the models as well as they can add some more information by
themselves. This is facilitated through the Google Sites which act as an interface.
However it should be aware to control who can access and be able to modify the
3Dmodels. If it is facilitated, then it is good to consider to keep the original
3Dmodels and data and not to confusing with the new ones built by the participants.
(managing data - public and private)
- Buildings that are accepted by the Google Earth (georeferenced models) should be put
in the sites too. So that participants in the pilots study can download the 3Dmodels
from the sites.
- Should be aware if there is only a small number of participants. Prepare some
alternatives to go in the pilot study.
- Get in touch with the students/participants as soon as possible to experience the
Virtual Malioboro

Ethical Approval for Research Questionnaire

A formal application of the research questionnaires to the ethics committee for
approval has been sent today. If you want to know about the forms and all the relevant information about the process, you can visit the Research
and Innovation pages on the university website.
